While the most students in schools are in normal classes, English Language Learners are often separated from the rest of the student body. These students, mostly hispanic immigrants, are put in special classes separate from the main student body where they are given special English instruction. Jane Eyre By Charlotte Bronte In Charlotte Bronte Jane Eyre, the main character faces many struggles. One of the struggles she faces is the temptation to run away with the man she loves and be his mistress or to marry a man who offers her the contrary where it would be a legal and highly respectable marriage but with no genuine love. Jane Eyre returns to Rochester because she values love and passion more than reason and when she hears his mysterious voice calling for her, she is also sure that Rochester and her share a spiritual link. Jane must decide between two men who have similar characteristics but are offering her almost exact opposite relationships. Jane must decide between reason and passion which is on of the main themes in the novel. The characteristics of the two men, who propose to Jane, conjure and symbolize the themes in Jane Eyre. Although, Rochester and St. John offer Jane entirely different relationships both men are noticeably selfish and disregard Jane's feelings to some degree. Both men are strong-willed, powerful, and stubborn about their ways of thinking and living. This is especially seen in St. John as Jane describes her cousin as being "as stiff about urging his point" as possible. They believe that want they do is in the best interest of Jane and use unfair methods to tempt Jane into going against her own morals. Rochester tries to convince Jane to run away with him by using the tragic story of his marriage to Bertha Mason. His story makes Jane feel sympathetic and only makes her "work more difficult." Rochester turns to emotional blackmail when Jane still resists him. He tries to use her affection towards him to his advantage by accusing her of pushing him "back on lust for a passion ? vice for an occupation." He questions her on whether "it is better to drive a fellow-creature to despair than to transgress a mere human law...?" St. John, on the other hand, is far more convinced that he knows what is truly best for Jane. His plan for her is moral and appeals to her loyalty and idealism about God. He claims her "not for pleasure" but for his "Sovereign service." But Jane must refuse him too because of her strong belief in that there must be love between two people for them to unite in marriage. St. John does not understand Jane's passionate nature, for him passion is an earthly emotion which must be put aside so that God can be served. He, himself, sacrifices his love for Rosamond Oliver because he thinks she would not make a good missionary's wife whereas Jane would but he does not truly love her. St. John uses his own ways to try to manipulate Jane but he does also try to use her affection towards him to his advantage. Unlike Rochester, St. John uses religious arguments to try to convince Jane to marry him. He tells her that her rejection is not of him but of God. He believes "it is the cause to God" he advocates and "it is under His standard" that he enlists Jane. But Jane states that she could never marry a man who is "as cold as an iceberg" and "has no more of a husband's heart." She "scorns the counterfeit sentiment" he offers to her and scorns his "idea of love." When his forceful attempts fail, he changes to a gentle tone which almost wins over Jane but in her confusion and sadness is when she hears Rochester's voice call out for her. Rochester's voice is speaking "in pain and woe, wildly, eerily, urgently" which sends Jane heading back to Thornfield. This time, it is not Jane's conscience but her passion and love for Rochester which convinces her to not marry St. John. Jane returns to Thornfield stronger morally and spiritually than before and finds that Rochester has changed for the better. Both characters have changed through the novel after suffering through hardships which indicates they should be together. Jane gradually matures through the whole novel but the most significant stage is after she leaves Thornfield. She learns her hunger and her need for shelter are her problems. Unlike her experiences at Gateshead and Lowood, Jane handles herself in a much more dignified manner when she arrives at the Moor House. There have been different art forms that have come and gone over the course of time. Some of the most intriguing art forms in my mind come from the 20th century. Out of all of these 20th century art forms, geometric abstract art and pop art are my favorite. These two art movements came close to each other in reference to time period. Geometric abstract art originated in the 7th century but became a dominant movement in 1937. Pop art emerged in the 1950s. These two art forms were similar in ways but they had different moods of expression. We will take a closer look at each one of these forms of art. Geometric abstraction form uses lines, squares, triangles and circles painted with primary or secondary colors or are sculpted in steel or aluminum. As mentioned, the focus of geometric abstraction began in New York after the outbreak of World War II where the tradition was continued by the American Abstract Artists group formed in 1937. The War had a great impact on the economy that was struggling to recover. War is always something that has effects on families and friends that have the daily threat of losing loved ones to injuries or even death. Being that art is a mighty way to express one self, geometric abstraction became popular throughout this time in history. The economic recovery after the war was positive and geometric abstract art had a strong impact on the society at that time. This art form has continued and is still seen various places in today’s society. One of the most famous geometric abstract srtists was Kazimir Malevich. Malevich is famous for his painting The Black Spuare. He was known for expressing himself in a spiritual way through his work. Music was one of his main ways to express himself but geometric abstraction was Malevich’s way of expressing â€Å"pure feeling.† This â€Å"pure feeling† is expressed in his work, The Black Square. This square was simply represented many things. It represented feeling, God, a void, and an icon. It is amazing how one great artist can use a simple square that represented so many things. This form of art has passed down to our generation what it means to express yourself through art. The Pop Art period came immediately after the Geometric abstraction period. This form of art originated in Britain way back in the mid 1950’s. Sometime from the late 1950’s, through the 1960’s it made its way into America and flourished throughout the 1970’s. This art was known as â€Å"fun† art because of the sense of humor portrayed in the art. This art period marked the end of modernism and was at the beginning of the postmodern era. â€Å"With respect to pop art, an artist would select required material fro, its source, isolate the entities that it is composed of and combine them with others extracted in a similar manner for consideration (pop art).† The social conditions that may have contributed to this style included the need by the artists to cut out identities and niches, â€Å"due to the academic orientation that was taking shape (pop art).† The term â€Å"pop art† began with artist Lawrence Aalloway. Lawrence was and English art critic that used this term to break away from the dominance of abstract art. The main point of pop art as a whole was to bring art back into the daily life of Americans. One of the most famous Pop Art artist is Andy Warhol. Andy was one of the first artist to use â€Å"repetition for allowing an iconic image to lose all value (pop art).† Andy’s most famous works of art is the Campbell’s soup cans. This started in 1962. Campbell’s soup can labels are very popular even in todays society. We see them on a regular basis in everyday life. Because it is so common, it has had a huge impact on advertisement for the Campbell’s soup company. Pop art began to be a great form of advertisement for many companies. This is one of the biggest impacts that pop art has on today’s society and art world. Little did Andy Warhol know, but his design would still be dominant and popular in 2012. These two art forms can be compared by looking at what the artist were trying to convey. Artists from both forms use their art to express some kind of emotion. They do this by using vibrant and neon colors. There are also the same in that they are both paintings. The main difference is that pop art depicts things as opposed to abstract art that has no subject. For example, abstract art uses big canvases and applies paint rapidly for expression as opposed to pop art which brings things of everyday life into art. It does this by using comics, television, and magazines. Pop artist found abstract expressionism to pretentious and intense. Abstract art is mainly based on emotion due to the horror of World War II and the conditions of the times. Pop art brought an era of excitement and enthusiasm through the tough times. It did this through fun forms of logos and advertisement. Pop art relates to abstract art by the idea of emotion being expressed through art, as well as they are both painting eras. Pop artists would attempt to express a fun and entertaining vibe through their work. They can also be compared with the fact that they both are paintings and come from the same overall time period. Pop art was used in the designs for the music covers of music artists such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Movie stars such as Marilyn Monroe were also conveyed through pop art. Famous pop artist Andy Warhol developed the concept of silkscreen printing which is used for mass production. Pop art was one of the biggest eras that renovated the art world by giving people and avenue for advertisement that is still used today such as the Campbell’s soup can labels. For this assignment, I observed my six year old niece, Faustine Bui who was born on August 16, 2007, at the park where I was babysitting her with her mom for approximately thirty minutes. The park I observed her at is packed with children and dogs are allowed. Pastoral practices largely helps an individual in gaining skills and insightful knowledge for the same. No knowledge can be complete, if it faces obstacles of freedom of expression of opinions or thoughts or questions. Pastoral practices allow an individual to emancipate himself from all the shackles of life, and to attain knowledge and express the same, with an everlasting zeal for greater enlightenment, through knowledge and wisdom. Any form of traditional thinking, is strongly determined by every day, traditional knowledge, but it is only the pastoral practices that help an individual undertake a quest for knowledge, so that one can reflect, ponder, analyze a nd evaluate before jumping into the conclusion [4]. In todays modern world, many schools adopt a pastoral approach for teaching the students, in order to help them develop, nurture and enhance their creative power and critical thinking. Instead of the traditional, formal method of teaching with the help of a book and a blackboard, many teachers have introduced the idea of informal, digital teaching, whereby a child is shown a lot of creative video and audio clips, before him and he makes his interpretation of the subject matter, on his own[5]. This self reflective and self-educating purpose of critical learning, as introduced by pastoral practices, has also being exploited by the modern education systems, though the concept of visual literacy. Visual literacy, using the very concept of pastoral practices, believes in allowing the children visualize things, engage in activity based learning, and interpret the subjects, based on ones own discretion [6]. There are many ways by which pastoral practice can be conducted. Some of them can be discussed here: The Catalytic Pastor: The catalytic pastor is regarded as the kind of pastor that has a lot of energy and is more focused towards the mission of the church. It is assumed that when focus is made on the mission of the church, everything goes right and it is directly influenced by Jesus. On the other hand, if in doubt, the same can result in some negative aspect and it might result in certain doubts as well. The Cultivating Pastor: This pastor talks about harvesting and nurture in the fields. This takes place when both the persons are willing to participate in harvest. In such situations, analysis of the system and manipulating it becomes a vital factor. This gives the opportunity to understand a persons patience and their ability to transform over time. Cultivating pastor is well suited for church transformations over a long duration of time [7]. The Conflict-Quelling Pastor: The conflict quelling pastor is the people who have the ability or are mediators and conflict managers. They are not regarded as the catholic and they are distinct from the chaplains. They are often regarded as the major players and they are the ones who are able to build bridges between different types of people. By nature, they are quiet and reflective and when they speak, they tend to give out wisdom of knowledge [8]. The Chaplin Pastor: This is considered to be the most vital pastor for developing inner peace. The Chaplin pastor is meant for peace and harmony among the people. This type of pastor is entertained by the means of step by step seminaries. The main objective of the people is not to stir the water but to bring healing to the hurting soul. People belonging to this category are excellent listeners and focus in bringing new congregation within the soul. The Catatonic Pastor: They are the refuge and they are responsible for the creation of things like brochures or other materials that are distributed to acknowledge the importance of divine on earth. They are the regular visitors to the hospitals and even have food with those admitted in the hospital. At times, it happens that the Catatonic Pastor remained as the senior pastor in the church for many years and is well known for their way to the grace others. In addition to all the mentioned ways of pastors, it can be said that critical thinking is an important tool for achieving positive aspect in pastoral practice. In cannot be denied that critical thinking open up the horizon of an individual to think wider and come up with better ideas to tackle the situation. Critical thinking holds great importance in several areas of life and is often regarded as an important component for an individual to think logically before arriving at a particular conclusion [9]. When critical thinking is done, it gives the opportunity to an individual to think logically and form an argumentative approach towards the work. Attempts have been made for forming more organic vision for theological education as well [10]. Several attempts have been made to accompany the theories to practice several assumptions. Challenging a situation and then analyzing it and finally deriving at a particular conclusion can be considered to be justified [11]. For instance, certain information is derived, it should not be blindly believed but it is expected that the person would search for certain evidences to support the information. It is only after analyzing the situation that the people can arrive at a logical and effective conclusion. Failure to the same might result in something that would misguide the person and the whole situation might take a turn [12]. Conclusion: There are several critical thinking tests as well that support the ability of a person to think logically and critically as well. One of such tool is The Watson-Glaser Thinking Appraisal. This tool is in fact used to determine the critical thinking ability of a person prior to appointing the person in company or organization. Many big organizations use this particular method to examine the ability of critical thinking of a candidate. It is only when the person successfully pass the test, he or she is selected for the particular position. This test is very important because in business or any other corporate matters, critical thinking is very important. The person lacking the ability to think critically cannot be trusted for successful business operations. All these assumptions can be regarded as important approaches that are made to understand the ability of a person to tackle the situation. Thus, it can be easily agreed on the fact that critical thinking hold good importance in the life of an individual and also to carry on with pastoral practices as well.
